No. 6 West Florida Remains Undefeated With 8-1 Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Playing only its second home match of the season, the No. 6 West Florida women’s tennis team (5-0, 3-0 GSC) stayed perfect with a 8-1 win over NAIA opponent No. 23 Cumberland (4-4) on Thursday at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Complex. West Florida did not have trouble to defeat the Bulldogs, as the Argonauts only dropped one singles match.

In doubles play, West Florida was too much for Cumberland, winning in all three spots with a comfortable score. In the first doubles spot, No. 24 Suzana Cavalcante (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paulina Ojeda (sophomore/Santiago, Chile) did not drop a game in their 8-0 victory over Natasha Yakimovich and Bea Mompo-Rebaque. In the third doubles spot, Caitlyn Baines (freshman/Panama City Beach, Fla.) and Cammie Gray (freshman/Shalimar, Fla.) dropped a single game in their 8-1 win over Amber Johnson and Courtney Schaub. To round up the doubles action, No. 12 Renata Mattos (senior/ Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Taylor Brewster (sophomore/Ontaro, Canada) defeated 8-4 Kerinn Meisenbach and Emily Jacobs in the second spot, giving the Argonauts a 3-0 lead entering the singles play.

In singles the Argonauts also dominated the Bulldogs, winning five of the six matches played. Playing in the fourth spot, Mattos defeated Schaub with a 6-2, 6-3 score. In the sixth spot, Gray defeated Johnson, also with a 6-2, 6-3 score, securing the Argonauts’ fifth and winning point. In the third singles, Brewster defeated Jacobs 6-4, 6-0. Like teammate Brewster, No. 15 Ojeda did not lose a game in one of the sets, defeating Mompo-Rebaque 6-0, 6-4 in the second position. In the fifth singles, Baines battled through a tiebreak in the first set, defeating Meisenbach 7-6, 6-3. When West Florida already had the 8-0 lead, No. 2 Cavalcante was pushed to a third set in the first singles. After being a set down, Yakimovich came back to defeat Cavalcante with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 score, earning the Bulldogs’ lone point.
