Despite losing the doubles point, the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory against the Weber State Wildcats, on Sunday, in Ogden, Utah.
"We are happy to close out the weekend with a victory," says head coach Kati Gyulai. "This was our fourth match in four days, we were tired mentally and physically but the ladies played hard and are happy with their effort. We look forward getting home and resting a few days before we take on SDSU, UNLV and Northern Colorado next weekend."
In doubles play, the Wildcats earned the point with wins at the number two and three spot. Sarah Summerfield and Carly Van Hollen started off with an 8-3 win against Brittiny Moore and Caroline Drugge. In the number two spot, Jamie Nelson and Rebecca Berger fought hard against Keya Jenkins and Greyce Farias but lost a tough one, 9-7. Carolina Chaix and Calli Pass were defeated by Elsje Beneke and Karlie Hancock, 8-2.
The Cowgirls made up for it by taking four of six matches in singles play. Sarah Summerfield began the day by defeating Keya Jenkins, 6-3, 6-3. Rebecca Berger played in the number two spot and beat Greyce Farias, 6-3, 6-1. Carly Van Hollen won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, against Caroline Drugge, while Jamie Nelson followed with a three set win, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0, over Brittiny Moore. In the number five spot, Carolina Chaix fought hard but came up short 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 against Katie Hancock. In the number six spot, Calli Pass finished up with a loss to Elsje Beneke, 6-2, 6-0.
The Cowgirls have some time off before heading to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on San Diego State University on Friday, April 3, and UNLV on Saturday, April 4. Wyoming will then finish up the weekend in Greeley, Colo., competing against Northern Colorado.
