Cowgirl Tennis Cruse Past Titans
Sunday, 03/21/2010

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team (8-3 overall) swept every match from the Cal State-Fullerton Titans (1-9 overall), on Sunday winning 7-0.

"We had a good week here in California, we adjusted well to the conditions and that helped us in the victories," said Wyoming head tennis coach Kati Gyulai.

The Cowgirls started the day off with three consecutive doubles victories against the Titans. Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs opened the match up with an 8-3 defeat of Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez. Wyoming’s Simona Synkova and Sasa Nemcova also cruised to an 8-3 victory over Erin Wiesener and Jerusha Cruz. The number three doubles team of Carly Van Hollen and Sarah Summerfield defeated Malorie de la Cruz and Karina Akhmedova, 8-3.

The doubles success would give the Cowgirls a lift in singles as they defeated their opponents in all six matches. Wyoming won in straight sets five of the six singles matches against the Titans. Kovacs started singles off for UW defeating the Titans Mai in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The number two match featuring Summerfield and Rodriguez was the only match of the day that needed three sets to decide. Summerfield opened the match up with a, 6-1 first set win, but fell 7-5 in the second set. The third set needed 24 games before Summerfield defeated Rodriguez, 13-11. Following that victory, the next four Cowgirls won in straight sets over their Titan competitors. The number three match saw UW’s Synkova defeat Wiesener, 6-3, 6-2. Wyoming’s Kim van Ginkel would get her first action of the day at the number four position, defeating de la Cruz, 6-3, 6-1. Cowgirl Berger defeated the Titans Cruz, 6-1, 6-3. Paloma Navarro saw her first action of the weekend for the Cowgirls on Sunday, defeating Akhmedova, 6-1, 6-2.

This weekend’s action saw, the Cowgirls shut out their fifth opponent of the season, and their second of the weekend. While improving their overall record to 8-3, UW tennis posted a 2-1 record on the weekend road trip. Wyoming’s Kovacs, Synkova and van Ginkel improved their weekend records to 3-0 on Sunday. Summerfield and Berger concluded their weekend with 2-1 records, while Nemcova went 1-1, and Navarro 1-0.

"We played against good competition that will prepare us for our conference matches coming up at the beginning of April, and we continue to improve with each match," added Gyulai.

Wyoming will travel to Denver, Colorado to take on the University of Denver Pioneers, on Sunday, March 28, with the match to begin at 10 a.m. Mountain Time.
