Women's Tennis Rolls into NCAA Singles and Doubles Round of 16
Sunday, 06/16/2013

URBANA, Ill. - Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane picked up a pair of wins on Thursday for the Alabama women's tennis team at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which are being played at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Illinois. Guarachi knocked off No. 2 seed Sabrina Santamaria in singles, 6-1, 6-3, and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-0 victory in doubles with Macfarlane to move on to Friday's Round of 16 in both tournaments.

Guarachi, ranked 36th in the nation, came out blazing in the first set, taking five straight games for the win. The second started out much closer, but a break to go up, 4-3, proved to be pivotal for Guarachi as she took the next two games to shut out Santamaria. By virtue of advancing to the NCAA Round of 16, Guarachi earns ITA All-America status in singles. The senior has already claimed All-America honors in doubles because of a top-eight seed in the tournament, making her the first player in program history to be named an All-American in both categories in the same season.

An hour after wrapping up with singles, Guarachi and Macfarlane took the court for their first doubles match of the tournament, facing Purdue's Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany. The Crimson Tide duo, ranked seventh nationally, got off to a fast start, winning the first three games of the match. The Boilermakers' 27th-ranked tandem tried to make a run, but Guarachi and Macfarlane held on for the 6-3 win. The second set belonged to Schmidt and Kapitany in the early goings as they got off to a 3-0 start before Guarachi and Macfarlane battled back to tie the frame at 5-5. Purdue ended up taking the second set in a tiebreaker to force the third and final set, which was all Alabama.

In the Round of 16 for singles, Guarachi will face TCU's Stefanie Tan, who beat Sofie Oyen of Florida and Samatha Vickers of Tulsa, at 10 a.m. CT on Friday. A time has not been set for Guarachi and Macfarlane's doubles match against Florida's Lauren Embree and Oyen.
