Doverspike Wins USTA Southern’s US Open National Playoff; Jansen Finishes Runner-up

ATLANTA – Former Crimson Tide player and current women’s tennis assistant coach Ricky Doverspike teamed with former Tennessee All-American Natalie Pluskota to win the USTA Southern’s US Open National Playoff in mixed doubles. The duo defeated Marcus Hurtig and Abigail Tere-Apisah, 7-6(1), 3-6, 11-9, to capture the crown.
 
With the victory, Doverspike and Pluskota have earned a place in the US Open National Playoffs, which will be held Aug. 20-23, in New Haven, Conn. The winner of the playoffs, which will consist of the champions from the 13 USTA regionals, earns a wild card into the mixed doubles main draw at the 2014 US Open.
 
Maya Jansen also represented Alabama at the event, advancing to the finals of the women’s singles draw where she dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Julie Ditty, who is 15 years Jansen’s senior and was formerly ranked 89th in the world.
