No. 44 Utah Women's Tennis Tops Colorado State, 7-0

SALT LAKE CITY- The 44th-ranked Utah women's tennis team (7-6, 1-0) defeated Colorado State (4-8, 0-2), 7-0, Friday to kick off conference play. Junior Erin Monson sealed the victory for the Utes from the No. 2 position with a 6-4, 6-1, win over Lauren Strasburger.

"It was great to open the MWC season with a solid win over a solid team," said head coach Mat Iandolo. " This set us up for our next step of the weekend, tomorrow's match against the Wyoming Cowgirls."

Senior Leigh Walsh and Sophomore Evgenia Kryuchkova at the No. 3 position downed Greer Satherlie and Rui Xu, 8-0. Monson and junior Andrea Maughan defeated Laura Neal and Strasburger at the No. 1 spot, 8-3, clinching the doubles point for Utah.

Freshmen Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson at the No. 2 position topped Tori Arneson and Kirsten Stople, 8-4, completing the Utes' doubles sweep.

In singles play Maughan at the No. 6 spot downed Xu, 6-0, 6-0, putting Utah up 2-0. Kryuchkova came up with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Stople at the No. 5 position, making way for Monson to clinch the match with her victory from the second spot.

Putilina defeated Neal at the No. 1 position, 6-4, 6-2, making the score 5-0.

At the No. 3 spot Walsh topped Arneson, 6-3, 7-6(2) and freshman Lexi Provancha finished out the Ute's sweep from the No. 4 position with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Satherlie.

Utah hosts conference opponent Wyoming (6-9, 1-1) Saturday, March 28, at the Eccles Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
