44th-ranked Utah Women's Tennis Sweeps MWC-Opening Weekend

SALT LAKE CITY- The 44th-ranked Utah women's tennis team (9-6, 3-0) topped Air Force (9-11, 0-3), 6-1, Sunday rounding out their opening weekend of conference play. Freshman Lexi Provancha clinched the match for the Utes with her 6-1, 7-5 win over Katrina Eromin at the No. 5 position.

"It was good to finish the weekend 3-0," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "It puts us at first in the league and it sets us up for some very strong competition on the road next week."

Juniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan at the No. 1 position blanked Christine Abayan and Allie Chermel, 8-0. Senior Leigh Walsh and Sophomore Evgenia Kryuchkova downed Sarah Cassman and Christen Monreal at the No. 3 spot, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point for Utah.

Freshmen Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson at the No. 2 position defeated Eromin and Shelley Johnson, 8-5, to finish off the Utes' doubles sweep.

In singles play Maughan at the No. 6 spot topped Rudico, 6-1, 6-1, putting Utah up 2-0. Johnson defeated Chermel at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 7-5, setting Provancha up to clinch the match for Utah with her victory from the fifth spot.

Walsh fell at the No. 2 position to Abayan, 6-4, 6-4, giving the Falcons their point. Monson downed Monreal at the No. 1 spot 7-6(2), 7-5, and Kryuchkova topped Cassman at the No. 4 position 3-6, 6-0, 7-5, to make the final score 6-1.

For their next action the Utes will head to Fort Worth, Texas to take on conference rivals TCU and New Mexico April 3-4.
