One Win On The Board For Dy At NCAA Singles
Wednesday, 05/23/2012
ATHENS, Ga. – After a month layoff waiting for this day to come, senior Denise Dy shook off the rust and advanced in the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championships with a first round win at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Dy defeated the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Marianne Jodoin of Fresno State in straight sets.
Dy, making her third appearance in the postseason championships, had a tough test in her first match since Senior Day back on April 22. Jodoin, ranked 41st nationally, has been named WAC Player of the Year each of her first two years at Fresno State. Bu Dy, ranked 17th, won the final three games of the first set to get ahead, 6-4. She then went to a tiebreaker in the second set but pulled away, 7-3, in the breaker.
She reaches the round of 32 for the second straight year, and will be looking for her first round of 16 appearance tomorrow when she faces No. 5 seed Mallory Burdette of Stanford. Burdette beat Dy twice this past fall season. A win would also mean an automatic ITA All-America honor for Dy.
