Dores shut down Gamecocks, 6-1

NASHVILLE – No. 18 Vanderbilt rolled to a 6-1 win over No. 27 South Carolina Friday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center.
With the win, the Commodores improved to 14-9 overall and 7-5 in SEC play, while South Carolina dropped to 13-9 on the season and 6-6 in conference action.
Vanderbilt opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins on court Nos. 1 and 3. At No. 1, Courtney Colton and Lauren Mira downed Jaklin Alawi and Dominika Kanakova, 8-4. In the No. 3 spot, Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn defeated Ximena Siles Luna and Elixane Lechemia, 8-4.
Josefin Andersson and Katerina Popova defeated Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares, 8-5, in No. 2 doubles.
Antal recorded the first singles victory of the match at No. 5. The sophomore defeated Siles Luna in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. With her win, Antal improved to 17-3 in dual play and 10-2 in SEC competition.
In No. 1 singles, Mira defeated Alawi, 6-2, 6-3, to give the Commodores a 3-0 lead. The win for Mira was her third conference victory of the season.
Shortly after Mira’s triumph, Casares took care of business at the No. 4 position. Casares defeated Kanakova, 7-5, 6-2, to clinch the win for Vanderbilt.
With the match already decided, Altick added on another point for Vanderbilt. The Monroe, La., native defeated Andersson in No. 6 singles, 7-6(3), 6-2. Altick improved her dual record to 16-5 on the season and 9-3 in SEC action.
The longest matches of the day took place in Nos. 2 and 3 singles. In the No. 2 position, Colton defeated Popova in three sets, 6-7(5), 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). To conclude the match, South Carolina’s Lechemia defeated Sellyn, 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 1-0 (10-6).
Vanderbilt will host No. 2 Florida for Senior Day on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CT at the Currey Tennis Center.
