Crimson Tide heads to Orlando, Fla. for its first action of the new year
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 25th-ranked Alabama women’s tennis team opens up its 2010 season when it travels to Orlando, Fla. to take part in the UCF Quad Tournament. The three day tournament gets underway on Saturday, Jan. 16 and ends on Monday, Jan. 18.
Along with host UCF, the Crimson Tide will also face off against No. 15 Florida State and No. 33 Illinois. All action will take place at the UCF Tennis Complex.
“We are looking forward to kicking off the spring season in Orlando this weekend,” said head coach Jenny Mainz. “We will get a look at some quality teams in UCF, Illinois and Florida State.”
Alabama returns all but one player from its 2008-2009 squad. The team features seniors Paulina Bigos and Alice Tunaru, juniors Merritt Emery and Tiffany Welcher, and sophomores Taylor Lindsey and Courtney McLane. Also joining the team this season is freshman Alexa Guarachi.
Each team will play one singles and one doubles match per day. The Tide begins with doubles against Florida State at 9:00 a.m. (CST) on Saturday. Alabama will compete against the host Knights in singles later that day at 1:00 p.m. (CST).
RadioTennis.com will be kicking off its live coverage of the 2010 season by covering all action of the UCF Quad Tournament on Jan. 17 and 18, with action beginning at 9:00 a.m. (CST) both days.
“This is a prime opportunity to gain valuable match play, work through point situations and work toward establishing doubles combinations,” added Mainz. “Our objectives are to compete well, play with energy and purpose and play disciplined, high-percentage tennis.”
The Tide returns home to open up its home schedule next Saturday, Jan. 23, by hosting a doubleheader against UAB and Southern Mississippi. The match against the Blazers is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. (CST), with the contest against the Golden Eagles slated for 3:00 p.m. (CST).
