Mary Anne Macfarlane and Emily Zabor win doubles final of their draw

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Alabama women’s tennis team had a competitive day one at the 2011 Furman Fall Classic, coming away with four doubles wins. Highlighting the day was a trio of victories from sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane and freshman Emily Zabor, which led to the Crimson Tide duo winning the finals of their draw.

“The real bright spots in the day were Mary Anne and Emily’s performances,” said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. “It was so rewarding to see their progression. By the last match, they were running some great plays and gained a lot of confidence. It was a good start for Emily in her collegiate career, and Mary Anne did a great job of being a leader on the court. I commend her for that.”

Macfarlane and Zabor won their first match by a score of 8-5 over Tennessee junior Kata Szekely and freshman Kayla McMurry. The Alabama duo followed that up with an 8-4 decision over Furman junior Lauren Kline and freshman Kelly Sullivan before taking the finals in 8-6 fashion over North Carolina freshman Caroline Price and sophomore Laura Slater.

Seniors Courtney McLane and Taylor Lindsey dropped their three matches, first against South Carolina junior Jaklin Alwai and senior Diana Stojic 9-7, then against North Carolina junior Lauren McHale and senior Haley Hemm (UNC) and Furman freshman Alex Moreno and sophomore Katherine Oudin. Both scores ended at 8-5.

Juniors Alexa Guarachi and Antonia Foehse won their first match against Gamecock junior Josefin Andersson and sophomore Katerina Papova, 9-7, but fell in their next two matches to Tennessee sophomore Brynn Boren and freshman Sarah Toti, 8-6 and South Carolina sophomore Dominika Kanakova and senior Anya Morgina, 8-2.

“Our other two teams struggled a bit today,” Mainz added. “I keep saying how we need to do the right things, and in some places we were, but we just couldn’t finish. The most important thing is we keep moving forward and come out tomorrow as a good day two team.”

Matches resume on Saturday with the opening round of singles at 8 a.m. CT.
