Mary Anne Macfarlane to play for main draw singles final
CARY, N.C. – The Alabama women’s tennis team tallied an additional six singles wins on Saturday at the Duke Fab Four Invite with all matches being played indoors at the Cone Kenfield Tennis Center due to weather. The five victories bring the Crimson Tide’s win total to 12 after two days at the tournament.
“Overall, today was a good day,” said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. “We were in all of the matches. We capitalized on some opportunities, and we allowed some chances to slip through our fingers. One of our goals tomorrow is to finish shots, finish points and finish sets more effectively.”
Sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane continued to roll through the main draw side of her bracket advancing all the way to the finals with a pair of wins on Saturday. Her first victory of the day was a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Virginia junior Hana Tomljanovic, while her semifinal win was a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 showing over Illinois freshman Melissa Kopinski. Senior Taylor Lindsey also won both of her matches on Saturday, moving Lindsey into the consolation draw finals. She first earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Texas A&M senior Lauren Santacroce and followed that up with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(2) victory over North Carolina junior Haley Hemm.
Alabama’s fifth win of the afternoon came from junior Alexa Guarachi as she took down Purdue freshman Lynda Xepoleas in the consolation draw of her bracket. Guarachi faced North Carolina freshman Caroline Price earlier in the day, falling 6-0, 6-3.
Junior Antonia Foehse and senior Courtney McLane also competed for the Tide on Saturday with Foehse falling 6-4, 6-3 to Texas sophomore Elizabeth Begley, while McLane dropped a pair of matches in her draw, first to Duke sophomore Rachel Kahan, 6-4, 6-1, then to North Carolina sophomore Lauren McHane, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0(6).
Matches will resume on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT with the doubles finals and will be followed by the final round of singles.
