Crimson Tide claims two main draw finals

CARY, N.C. – The Alabama women’s tennis team had a successful day three at the Duke Fab Four Invite, adding another five wins with two coming in doubles and three in singles. Throughout the three-day tournament, the Crimson Tide collected 17 total victories, including finals titles in singles and doubles.

“We had a really good day three,” Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. “I was very impressed. I thought we had a solid start and a strong finish. We competed well and improved throughout the course of the weekend.”

Alabama started the day off with an impressive showing in doubles where the Tide won both its matches, including the finals of the main draw. Seniors Courtney McLane and Taylor Lindsey put forth one of their best matches together to pull through with a 9-8(6) victory over the Virginia pair of senior Emily Fraser and junior Hana Tomljanovic. Juniors Alexa Guarachi and Antonia Foehse also notched a win in doubles for Alabama, posting an 8-4 decision over Miami sophomores Melissa Bolivar and Brittany Dubins.

In singles, sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane dominated Mississippi junior Kristi Boxx, 6-1, 6-2, to capture the singles finals of her draw. Guarachi and Foehse each picked up a singles victory as well, topping Texas junior Aeriel Ellis, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(4), and Texas A&M senior Lauren Santacroce 6-7, 6-4, 1-0(6), respectively. Lindsey also competed in singles on Sunday, dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Texas sophomore Elizabeth Begley.

“Alexa played her best match today and was extremely diligent with putting pressure on,” Mainz added. “Mary Anne played deliberate, convincing tennis and took control from the beginning. I really like the way she is playing. Taylor competed hard, but just could not get things rolling. Antonia had great fight today. She showed a lot of spirit. Our doubles was also really strong today. Overall, I thought we had a great showing at our first fall tournament.”

Alabama returns to action next weekend when it travels to Greenville, S.C. for the Furman Fall Classic.
