Three Crimson Tide players in respective singles draw finals

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Alabama women’s tennis team had another strong showing on Saturday at the Furman Fall Classic where the Crimson Tide picked up nine wins in singles action. Three of Alabama’s players, including sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane and juniors Alexa Guarachi and Antonia Foehse, went undefeated on the day advancing to their respective singles draw finals.

“We had a good day two, and I am very pleased,” said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. “I thought everyone competed well today. To have three players in finals is outstanding. We wanted to come out and start strong. I thought we did a good job of following through with that. We played some very deliberate tennis today. It was an encouraging day and really showed a lot of promise.”

Five of the six Tide players picked up wins in their opening round matches, highlighted by Macfarlane’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Furman junior Lauren Kline in the top flight. Guarachi also picked up a win in straight sets topping Clemson sophomore Klara Vyskocilova 6-3, 6-4. Guarachi advanced to the finals of her draw by virtue of a walkover versus Florida State junior Noemie Scharle. Senior Taylor Lindsey outlasted Seminole freshman Leyla Erkan 7-5, 6-4, while Foehse posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tennessee freshman Joanna Henderson. Also getting a victory in her first collegiate singles match was freshman Emily Zabor, with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tennessee freshman Kayla McMurry.

In second round play, Macfarlane took down Clemson senior Keri Wong, 7-6, 6-2, while senior Courtney McLane bounced back from a first-round loss to beat Furman sophomore Margaret Boyette, 6-3, 7-5. Lindsey was stopped up by Vanderbilt senior Chelsea Preeg in her second match of the day, as was Zabor, who fell 6-3, 6-2 to South Carolina junior Josefin Andersson. The day wrapped up with an exciting comeback from Foehse, who, after dropping her first set to Gamecock sophomore Domi Kanakova, battled her way to 7-6(5), 7-5 wins in the next two sets to take the match.

“That is a great way to finish strong, especially at a tournament of this caliber,” added Mainz. “Antonia did a great job competing. After losing the first set, she really dug in. To end on a note like that gives us a lot of confidence and momentum for tomorrow.”

Matches will resume at 8 a.m. CT on Sunday.
