Women’s Tennis - ITA West Regionals
Los Angeles, CA—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Annie Hwang dominated singles play at the women’s USTA/ITA West Regional Tournament so it was fitting that she claimed the championship on a walkover when scheduled to face her teammate and doubles partner, Sherry Liu, in the final. The Seasider duo then teamed up for an equally dominating win in the doubles championship.
In singles play top-seeded Hwang whitewashed third-seeded Katherina Mittag of Grand Canyon 6-0, 6-0 in today’s semifinals. It marked the third consecutive 6-0, 6-0 win for Hwang in the tournament after she yielded just on game in her opening match of the tournament. Liu, the fourth seed in singles play, defeated second-seeded Christie Lau of host Cal State-Los Angeles 6-1, 6-1 before withdrawing from the finals in deference to her teammate.
In double play Hwang and Liu teamed up as the top seed to defeat Mittag and Frederique Van de Velde of Grand Canyon 8-0 in the championship match. The Seasider pair lost just a single game in their first doubles match of the tournament and then swept their final three matches 8-0 each.
By winning the west region Hwang and Liu will move on to play in the ITA Small College Championships to be held in Mobile, Alabama beginning on October 13th.
