Duke Falls in Semifinal

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 2 Florida Gators ended Duke’s run in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championship with a 4-1 win in the semifinal on Sunday. The Blue Devils advanced to the semifinal for the second straight year after defeating Tennessee in the first round and Virginia in the quarterfinal.

Duke dropped the doubles point to Florida for the second time this season after leading in all three matches. Florida eventually closed the match in singles winning three out six matches, even though Duke took three matches to third sets.

Allie Will and Sofie Oyen proved their number one ranking with an 8-3 win over Ellah Nze and Monica Gorny and went on to claim the doubles point when Alex Cercone and Olivia Janowicz downed Elizabeth Plotkin and Reka Zsilinszka. Plotkin and Zsilinszka jumped ahead 2-0 as Cercone and Janowicz won eight straight points to seal the early 1-0 lead with an 8-2 win.

Duke and Florida battled in singles throughout the competition. Will took the first point for the Gators in singles beating Nadine Fahoum in straight sets to put Florida ahead 2-0. Nze and Joanna Mather battled in the second set after Mather won the first set 6-2. Nze got ahead early but allowed Mather to close her down with a 7-5 win in the second to put Florida ahead 3-0.

With four matches remaining Plotkin put Duke on the board from the number four position in a three set decision. Plotkin downed Oyen 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to make the score 3-1. Cercone would eventually clinch the match from the number six spot. Cercone defeated Clayton in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 to to send the Gators to the finals.

Duke (8-2) will next take on Wake Forest to open ACC play on Wednesday, March 2 in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. (EST).
