Mar Falls in First Round of NCAA Singles

URBANA, Ill. – Junior Hanna Mar of the Duke women’s tennis team dropped her opening round match in the 2013 NCAA Individual Championships to Tulsa’s No. 18 Samantha Vickers, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, Wednesday morning at the Kahn Outdoor Tennis Center.

Mar, ranked 29th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) poll started the match with two consecutive breaks over Vickers to take a commanding, 5-0, lead in the opening set. Vickers was able to respond with a break of her own and held serve to cut into the Mar advantage, 5-2, before the Blue Devil junior was able to close out the first set with her third break, 6-3. In the second set, Vickers used four breaks in serve to win the second set, 6-3, and send the match into a decisive third set.

In the third set, Vickers opened by winning the first five games to take a commanding, 5-0, lead. Mar fought back and responded by taking the next two games, before Vickers completed the win and advanced to the round of 32.

Mar, a product of Burr Ridge, Ill., concludes the campaign with a 24-10 singles ledger.
