FAU Men's Tennis Knocks Off North Florida 4-3
Monday, 02/08/2010

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team bounced back in the win column with a 4-3 victory over the University of North Florida on Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville.

The victory improved FAU to 2-2 on the season and halted a two-match losing streak. The Owls fell 7-0 to No. 11 ranked University of Florida on Saturday. North Florida falls to 3-2 on the season.

Head Coach Brandon Stokes likes what he saw from his team in this weekend's two matches.

"This was a challenging weekend for the guys by playing back-to-back matches on the road," said Stokes.

Sophomore Derek Madon helped secure two points as he teamed with junior Joshua Scholl to earn a victory at the No. 2 doubles and won at No. 5 singles to give the Owls the match-clinching fourth point. Madon picked up a straight-set win in singles action but had to rally in both sets to record the victory, 7-5 and 6-4.

"I had to just play every point in order to fight back from being down 4-1 in both sets," said Madon, who picked up his first singles victory of the spring dual match season. "It was nice to help the team get the win. This was a big win for us because the action was tight and intense in every court."

Junior Marc Abdelnour cruised to a straight-set win to anchor the Owls' singles lineup by a score of 6-1 and 6-3. Scholl rounded out the winners in singles action with a 6-3 and 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.

In doubles action, the Owls swept all three matches to earn the only doubles point possible. Abdelnour teamed with senior Lawrence Harradine to win 8-6 at the No. 1 position. Junior Ervin Garibovic and freshman Matthew Braunworth won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.

FAU returns to the court on Saturday, February 13 against the University of Texas-San Antonio in Tampa, Fla. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
