FAU's Abdelnour Named Sun Belt Conference's Male Tennis Player of the Week
Sunday, 03/21/2010

BOCA RATON, FL (March 18, 2010) -- A perfect 7-and-0 record in both singles and doubles action has paved the way for Florida Atlantic University junior Marc Abdelnour to be recognized as the Sun Belt Conference's Male Tennis Player of the Week. The honor was announced earlier this week by league officials.

Abdelnour, a native of Aleppo, Syria, won all four No. 1 singles matches during the reporting period, including key victories over Luis Henrique Grangeiro of Troy University, in three sets on March 14, and Stephen Erickson of New Jersey Institute of Technology in convincing fashion 6-1, 6-2 on March 16. Grangeiro had been ranked 17th in the South region, while Erickson suffered his first loss of the spring season.

Those victories gave Abdelnour 57 career singles wins and 95 career doubles wins - ranking about the Owls' all-time best players, dating back to 2000.

Head Coach Brandon Stokes believes that while the Sun Belt Conference recognized Abdelnour, the award is something that all member of the Owls' tennis program can appreciate.

"It's an honor for Marc, his teammates and FAU that he receives this recognition," said Stokes. "Most significantly, it's a reflection of our trainer Shayna Nickel's daily commitment to our team to help Marc recover from an injury. Marc's work ethic, and passion for tennis and our team put him in position to be back on the court."

This is the third time that Abdelnour has been recognized by the conference with the Player of the Week Award. He was honored twice in consecutive weeks last season.

The Owls return to the court on Sunday, March 21 against Princeton University. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. from Patch Reef Park, 2000 Yamato Road in Boca Raton.
