Rally Falls Short as FAU Men's Tennis Suffers 4-3 Loss to Princeton
Sunday, 03/21/2010

BOCA RATON, FL (March 21, 2010) -- A singles rally by the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team fell short on Sunday afternoon, leading to a 4-3 loss to Princeton University at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton.

The loss drops FAU's record to 9-6 on the spring dual match season and halts a two-match winning streak.

"Fundamentals let us down in doubles. So, we dug ourselves a hole that we just could not get out of today," said Men's Tennis Head Coach Brandon Stokes.

After dropping the only possible doubles point, junior Marc Abdelnour began the comeback with a convincing straight-set victory at No. 1 singles by identical 6-2 scores. The Aleppo, Syria native has now won six straight matches and nine of his past 10 matches to improve his record to 11-6 on the season.

Freshman Georg Matschke also won in straight sets at No. 5 singles by dropping only five games, including a 6-1 victory in the second set.

Junior Joshua Scholl earned the Owls' third point with a dramatic come-from-behind triumph at No. 4 singles. The Pompano Beach native rallied after dropping the first set 6-2 to win the second set 6-3 to force a deciding third set. Scholl proceeded to win that third set by a decisive 6-0 score - winning the last 12 games of the match after trailing 3-0 in the second set.

"Josh showed terrific fight on the court," said Stokes.

Abdelnour and sophomore Derek Madon picked up the Owls' lone doubles victory with an 8-5 win in the No. 3 position.

FAU returns to the court on Wednesday, March 24 against Wright State University, starting at 2 p.m., at Patch Reef Park.
