TAMPA, FL (February 13, 2010) – The Florida Atlantic University men’s tennis team won consecutive matches for the first time this season as the Owls defeated the University of Texas-San Antonio 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in Tampa.
The win improves FAU to 3-2 on the season and will return to the court on Friday, February 19 against in-state rival University of Central Florida. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. UTSA falls 3-2 on the spring dual match season.
FAU won five of the six singles matches to rally from an early deficit. Junior Ervin Garibovic cruised to a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles to even the match after the Roadrunners won the only possible doubles point. Garibovic won 6-3 and 6-1 to clinch his second straight singles victory.
Fellow junior Joshua Scholl earned a victory in the No. 5 singles position by scores of 6-2 and 6-4. Junior Marc Abdelnour picked up a two-set victory to anchor the singles lineup to put the Owls on the verge of victory with a 6-4 and winning a second set tiebreaker 7-4.
Senior Daniel Vardag clinched the team victory with the fourth point by earning a three set victory. He won the opening set 6-3 but had to withstand a late rally by winning the deciding third set by a 6-1 margin.
Lawrence Harradine rallied to pick up a victory at No. 2 singles to round out the Owls’ singles victories. The senior won 6-3 and 6-4 after dropping the opening frame.
