FAU Men's Tennis Team Continues Winning Ways with 7-0 Victory over Southern Illinois
Thursday, 03/11/2010

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Sweeping all six singles matches with decisive straight-set victories, the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches with a commanding 7-0 victory over Southern Illinois University on Wednesday at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton.

The win increases the Owls' record to 7-3 on the season. The team has won six of its last seven matches. Southern Illinois falls to 4-7 on the spring campaign.

"I'm proud of the guys for their play today and how relentless they were on the court," said Men's Tennis Head Coach Brandon Stokes. "It is tough in collegiate tennis to win by 7-0 scores in two straight days (after defeating Kennesaw State University)."

Junior Marc Abdelnour returned to the lineup and scored a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 1 singles to even his singles record to 6-6 on the season. It was also his 54th career win.

Senior Lawrence Harradine also posted his 54th career singles match when his opponent at No. 2 retired with Harradine already up a set and leading 4-1 in the second frame. The Barcelona, Spain native also cruised to a victory in doubles with freshman Georg Matschke, winning by a lopsided 8-1 score.

Junior Joshua Scholl improved to 7-3 on the season when he dropped only five games to win at No. 3 singles. He teamed with sophomore Derek Madon to fight off a match point and a 7-6 deficit to win the last three games at No. 2 doubles - a victory that helped give the Owls the lone doubles point in the dual match.

Other singles victories were recorded by Madon, a 6-1and 6-4 winner at No. 4; freshman Matthew Braunworth, with a 6-3 and 6-2 win at No. 5; and Matschke, with a 6-1 and 6-3 triumph at No. 6.

FAU hopes to continue its winning ways on Friday, March 12 against Sun Belt Conference rival Troy University, starting at 2 p.m. at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton.
