Gustavus wins five matches in one weekend

The Gusties beat Division II Montana State-Billings 9-0 as eleven players saw action on Thursday. However, the busy day was Saturday. In the morning at 8:30 a.m. part of the team helped Coach Wilkinson give a doubles clinic to the Minnesota State High School coaches at Fort Snelling Tennis Center. Afterwards at 11 a.m. they defeated conference rival Bethel University 8-1. Meanwhile other Gustavus players hosted NAIA Morningside College and came away with an easy 9-0 victory. A third Gustie team defeated conference rival St. Olaf 8-1 in a match that began at 1 p.m. In the evening Gustavus defeated a strong Iowa opponent Grinnell College 8-1. The five victories extended the winning streak to nine, the MIAC record to 4-0, and the season record to 12-3.
Early the next morning, made earlier by the loss of an hour to daylight savings time, the top Gustavus players drove south to Des Moines to face Division I power Drake University. The Gusties played well in doubles, winning at #3 and coming very close at #1. In singles Drake defeated Gustavus in five out of the six matches. Only freshman Pat Clark emerged with a victory. The final score was 6-1. In Division I only one point is awarded to the team who wins two out of three doubles matches.
This coming Saturday, March 14 will be another busy day for the Gusties. Four visiting teams come to the Swanson Center. At 8:30 a.m. they face a strong University of Wisconsin-Whitewater team. At 1 p.m. Gustavus plays conference rival St. Mary's University, followed by Sioux Falls University at 3:30 p.m. The final match is St. John's University at 6 p.m. Spectators are urged to come. These are the last home matches until May, when Gustavus hosts the conference playoff tournament.
