Hoosiers Come Up Short at Tennesee
Monday, 02/23/2009

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The #30 Indiana University women's tennis team fell to the #22 Lady Vols of Tennessee, 7-0, on Friday. The Hoosiers are now 7-3 on the season and are set to take on Kentucky Sunday afternoon.

"This is the best team Tennessee has had in about six years, but we should have been in every match and we weren't," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "We had a few really bad match-ups in playing style, and those results I understand. But some other matches should have been closer."

The doubles point was very closely contested. At No. 2 doubles, Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel came up just short before dropping a tiebreaker and falling 9-8. The first doubles team of Alba Berdala and Katya Zapadalova were also in it until the very end in their 8-6 defeat.

"We started slow in doubles but then made a match of it," said Loring. "Overall I was pleased with our doubles, we were in every match."

In singles action, Berdala and Lindsey Stuckey each won a set at third and fifth singles, respectively. Stuckey won her opening set, 7-5, over Zsofia Zubor while Berdala snagged her second set versus Samantha Orlin, who is slotted #112 in the latest ITA National Singles rankings.

"The singles reminded me of our Duke match, we were all over the place mentally," said Loring. "We will need a much better total team effort on Sunday to be competitive with Kentucky. Individually we had some great efforts today, but we also had some players that lost focus."

The Cream and Crimson now hop right on the bus and head over to Lexington, Ky., for an 11 a.m. with the UK Wildcats on Sunday.
