MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Indiana women’s tennis players Evgeniya Vertesheva and Kayla Fujimoto completed Sunday play at the ITA Regional Championships with a doubles victory and Vertesheva added a singles win.
In the back draw doubles quarterfinals, Fujimoto and Vertesheva were dominant as they downed Eastern Kentucky’s Jessica Albuquerque and Amandine Faouzi, 8-2. It marked the duo’s second doubles win in as many days in Memphis.
In singles, No. 80 Vertesheva will move forward in the main draw after picking up a victory over Christiana Raymond of Miami (OH) in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Fujimoto played a great match against one of the best college tennis players in the country in No. 31 Brynn Boren of Tennessee. Boren just edged Fujimoto in the opening set that needed a tiebreaker to be decided, 7-6 (7-3). Fujimoto rebounded in set two cruising to a 6-2 win to even the match. But Boren closed the door in the third and final set, 6-3, to take the match.
The ITA Regionals will continue on Monday morning at the University of Memphis at 8 a.m. CT. Stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com for updates.
