WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Miami won four singles matches and the doubles point Friday to capture a 5-2 victory over Purdue at the Schwartz Tennis Center in the opening match of the 2009 tennis season.

After winning two out of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, the RedHawks earned singles wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 5 to clinch the victory.

"Even two minutes into the season, I am feeling pretty nostalgic," Head Coach Howard Joffe said. "The program has come so far and today we handled a strong Big Ten team. It could be one of biggest win in hist of program. We got it done with lot of toughness and discipline."

Freshman Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf started things off with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, but Purdue won the No. 2 match. Freshman Monica Gorny and Anastasia Dracheva put Miami up 1-0 with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Purdue tied the score at 1-1 after the first singles match, a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4. But Miami earned the victory by winning the next three singles matches.

Dracheva won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, then Stephanie Danesis took a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 2. Larson picked up the clinching fourth point with a 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4 before Gorny added to the victory with a 6-4, 6-3 sweep at No. 3.

Purdue won the No. 6 singles match, 6-4, 7-6 at the end of the day to make the final margin.

"We were all pretty nervous," Gorny said. "There was a pretty good energy and as matches went on, we fed off each other winning. Personally, I have never played a team match before, so it was exciting."

Miami returns to action on Sunday with a pair of matches at Indiana. The RedHawks face Eastern Illinois in the morning, before tackling the host Hoosiers in the afternoon.
