Tennis Teams Win Four Out of Five in West Texas Swing

The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled to West Texas on Saturday to play a grueling five matches in one day.

The men went 3-0 on the day, while the women went 1-1.

The 29th-ranked women opened the day by losing to Hardin-Simmons 6-3, but bounced back with a 7-2 win over Howard Payne later in the day.

Freshman Sydni Hermsdorf (Spring, Texas) and junior Brittany Ude (Corpus Christi, Texas) each went 2-0 on the day. Hermsdorf played at No. 5 in singles, while Ude played at No. 6.

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Michelle Hagler and senior Beth Launius (LaGrange, Texas) were also undefeated, as the duo won both of their matches as well.

On the men’s side, the 21st-ranked Patriots started the day off by beating No. 31 Hardin-Simmons, 7-2. The men then went on to beat McMurry, 6-3, and Howard Payne, 7-2.

Senior Dustin Phillips (Houston, Texas), junior David Ashlock (Arlington, Texas) and freshman Shaun Maddox (Montgomery, Texas) all ended the day with perfect 2-0 records in singles play.

Phillips and Ashlock also went 2-0 as a doubles team. Joining Ashlock and Phillips with a 2-0 doubles record was the team of sophomore Robert Sajovich (Austin, Texas) and freshman Andrew Reznik (Southlake, Texas).

The men now stand at 5-0 on the year, while the women are 4-1.

Both teams will return home to the Summers Tennis Center next Saturday for five more matches. Each team will start the day by facing Millsaps in non-conference action at 9 a.m., with the women kicking-off American Southwest Conference East Division play at 1 p.m., against Texas-Dallas. The day will conclude with both teams taking Louisiana College in another ASC East match-up at 4:30 p.m.
