Tennis Sweeps ASC East Honors; Men Move Up in Polls
Thursday, 03/19/2009

Juniors David Ashlock and Brittany Ude of The University of Texas at Tyler tennis teams were both named as American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week on Wednesday by the conference office.

Also released on Wednesday was the latest edition of the NCAA Division III Campbell/ITA Tennis Rankings in which the UT Tyler men moved from 20th to 14th, nationally.

Ashlock went 2-0 at both No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles on the week and clinched the winning point for UT Tyler in each match. The Arlington native also saved match point for the Patriots in their thrilling 5-4 upset of No. 13 Redlands.

On the women’s side, Ude (Corpus Christi, Texas) earned her honor by going 2-1 in singles action on the week, including a win in the match against nationally-ranked Chapman.

The six-spot rise in the polls for the UT Tyler men comes on the heels of a five match swing in California, with all five matches being played against Top 30 opponents.

Despite moving up in the national poll, the men held fast at No. 6 in the West Region. The West currently holds eight spots in the Top 30 poll, with three teams being ranked in the Top 10.

Individually in the region, senior Dustin Phillips (Houston, Texas) ranked sixth among all singles players, with sophomore Robert Sajovich (Austin, Texas) and Ashlock following at 10th and 23rd, respectively.

In the doubles rankings, Phillips and Ashlock came in at fifth, while Sajovich and freshman Andrew Reznik were ranked 12th.

In the women’s poll, the Patriots came in at eighth as a team in the region.

In singles play, senior Beth Launius (LaGrange, Texas) was the highest ranking UT Tyler player at 16th, while sophomore Michelle Hagler (Austin, Texas) was 23rd.

In the pairs rankings, Launius and Hagler received the highest spot in any individual poll, singles or doubles, from either UT Tyler team with a solid No. 2 ranking.

On Sunday, both Patriot squads will return to the Summers Tennis Center to host Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m.
