RENO, Nev. - The No. 59 University of Nevada men’s tennis team opened its Western Athletic Conference season Saturday at Lakeridge Tennis Club defeating the University of Idaho 6-1.

Despite not being able to pick up the doubles point, Nevada (7-3, 1-0 WAC) made a quick turn around, sweeping singles competition for the fifth time in 10 matches and three players each picked up their 10th singles win on the season, juniors Alex Daruty, Gabe Kanzelmeyer and sophomore Kristian Kuharszky.

Junior Laurent Garcin picked up his 52nd career singles win in the No. 1 position, defeating Artem Kuznetsov 6-4, 6-0 and freshman Wessim Derbel picked up his ninth singles win defeating Stanislav Glukhov 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 2 spot.

Daruty and junior Augustin Myard got off to a rough start in their respective singles matches. But both of them came back as Daruty defeated Alexandru Joitoiu 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot and Myard defeated Robert Chalkley 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the No. 4 spot.

Kuharszky picked up the Wolf Pack’s match-winning point in the No. 5 spot, defeating Alan Shin 6-2, 7-6 (5). Kanzelmeyer continues to remain unbeaten in the No. 6 spot as he defeated Hugh McDonald 7-6 (3), 6-2.

“[Assistant Coach] Jay Stearley and I are proud of the guys coming back after losing the doubles point,” Nevada head coach Chad Stoloff said. “Once again our theme of the season is competing and giving ourselves a chance to win matches. We did that today against Idaho.”

The Wolf Pack’s six-match homestand continues next weekend when the Pack faces three teams in three days, Gonzaga on March 27, Saint Mary’s on March 28 and Montana on March 29. All home matches are held inside Lakeridge Tennis Club.
