NEW ORLEANS - Back on the Lakefront for the first time since pre-Katrina, the No. 75 ranked University of New Orleans men's tennis team defeated Grambling 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
UNO (3-0) opened play by taking the doubles' point. GSU (0-2), short a player, lost No. 3 doubles by a walkover, putting the Privateer men in a position where they needed to win just one of the two matches.
Head coach Burzis Kanga
's squad did that quickly as Ben Smith
and Jose Gaspar defeated Ryan Charles and Victor Semerdjieva 8-1 in No. 2 doubles.
and Guilherme Rebolo
added another win at No. 1 doubles for good measure, defeating Nicolas Rufyikiri and Emmanuel Fortune 8-3.
The Privateers had no problem in taking each of the singles' matches as the Tigers' Anton Belikov was the only one who won more than two games against a member of the UNO lineup, losing to Smith 6-2, 6-3 in No. 3 singles.
Kemp and Vinay Kamineni
improved to 3-0 in dual play while playing in the top spots of the lineup. Kemp defeated Rufyikiri 6-0, 6-1 while Kamineni picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Charles.
Other wins for UNO included Gaspar over Semerdjieva at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1 and Oliver Cuthill
defeating Emmanuel Fortune 6-2, 6-1.
The Privateer men will join their female counterparts for a dual match on Wednesday at the University Tennis Center at 2 p.m. as they take on Alcorn State.
