Privateers' Kamineni Tabbed SBC Player of the Week
NEW ORLEANS - University of New Orleans men's tennis player Vinay Kamineni was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, it was announced on Thursday afternoon.
The freshman from Vizag, India won all six matches for which he contested over the weekend, going 3-0 at No. 2 singles and 3-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Kamineni only allowed five games to his three foes in singles, defeating Mike Green of Xavier (6-0, 6-2), Vishesh Bhatia of Jackson State (6-2, 6-0) and Lucas DeBrito of Austin Peay (6-0, 6-1).
In doubles, Kamineni was part of an effort to end the team's struggles in winning the doubles' point, teaming with Jose Gaspar to only drop one game over the weekend. Gaspar and Kamineni defeated tandems from JSU and AP by 8-0 scores while topping a tandem from XULA 8-1.
Kamineni is the first Privateer to receive SBC Player of the Week honors since Viktor Loven on Mar. 27, 2003.
The UNO men's tennis team will face Southern Illinois on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the University Tennis Center in their final home match of the season.
