NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams defeated Alcorn State 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
For the nationally ranked Privateer men (4-0), the doubles' point was hotly contested. After
Vinay Kamineni and
Oliver Cuthill picked up a win at No. 3 doubles, the top two matches saw the Alcorn men (0-2) push UNO to the brink.
Calvin Kemp and
Guilherme Rebolo defeated Yannick Shearron-Hawkins and Anton Krutkin 8-6 at the No. 1 position before
Ben Smith and Jose Gaspar closed out the doubles sweep with a 9-7 win at No. 2 over Winfried Weinbeer and Puja Rajpurohit 9-7.
Singles' play came much easier for the Privateers as each player in the lineup defeating their foes in straight sets.
The closest contested match came at No. 4 singles where Smith defeated Rajpurohit 7-6 (0), 6-3. Additionally, Kemp and Kamineni continued their unbeaten record in singles' play in the top two positions as Kemp defeated Krutkin 6-4, 6-3 and Kamineni won over Weinbeer 6-3, 6-3.
The UNO women (3-3) won for the third straight time after opening the season with three consecutive losses.
Getting off to a strong start, the Privateer women dropped two games over the three doubles matches to take the doubles' point.
Kozue Matsumoto and
Cassandra Escobar were leading Stefania Guzman and Katherine Hopelman 7-1 at the No. 1 doubles position before Hopleman was injured. Hopleman would have to pull out of the singles' competition, forcing the Braves (0-2) to push each girl a spot higher in their lineup.
Among the winners on the women's side were
Anita Racz, who celebrated her birthday a day late with a victory in her spring debut. Racz's win came at No. 6 singles as she defeated Denisse Favelsa 7-5, 6-0.
