(San Diego, CA) - The No. 2 seeded USD Toreros dealt No. 7 seed Loyola Marymount a 4-1 defeat in today's first round action of the 2009 West Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championships being played locally at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma. The Toreros advance to Saturday's semi-finals where they will play at 3:00 p.m. against #3 Portland who downed #6 Gonzaga, 4-1. Parking and admission is free at this three-day event with the WCC Women's Tennis Championships being played as well.
USD won the doubles point with Dean Jackson and Nils Schive winning at No. 1 (8-4 over Maggi-Malet), and Juan de Villiers & Chris Coetzee winning at No. 3 (8-3 over Lopez-Van Der Ahe). The Toreros clinched the match at No. 6 singles where sophomore Nils Schive won USD's 4th point with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Geza Bazula. USD also received singles wins at No. 1 from Dean Jackson (6-1, 6-4 over Ivan Lopez) and at No. 4 by Nikola Bubnic (6-2, 6-4 vs. Johan Berhof). Torero freshman Tom Wolff was handed a 7-5, 6-4 setback at No. 5 singles by LMU's Renzo Maggi.
