Toreros win 1st round NCAA match against Fresno State
(Los Angeles, CA) - The USD men's tennis team defeated Fresno State 4-0 in today's first round NCAA Tournament match played at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA. With the win the 27th-ranked Toreros improve to 18-9 and advance to tomorrow's second round 1:00 p.m. match against the UCLA Bruins, a 4-0 winner over Eastern Kentucky.
The Toreros earned the all-important doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 tandem of Patrick Pohlmann and Thibaut Visy earned an 8-3 win over Fresno State's 58th-ranked duo of Francis Alcantara and Remi Boutiller. USD earned the doubles point when the Torero tandem of Nikola Bubnic and Ciaran Fitzgerald earned an 8-5 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Patrick Pohlmann continued his excellent play with a solid 6-3, 6-0 win over 43rd-ranked Alcantara at No. 2. Thibaut Visy improved USD's lead to 3-0 with his straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win over David Ayoun at No. 4. Clarke Spinosa closed out the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 win over Jean-Charles Diame at No. 3. USD's three other singles matches were all very close when the match ended with the Torero victory.
Fresno State closes out their 2011-12 campaign with a record of 20-5.
