Whitehead edges closer to main draw at ITA All-American Championships

UT junior Daniel Whitehead adds another win, would earn berth in main singles draw with a win on Wednesday.
TULSA, Okla. – Texas junior Daniel Whitehead posted a three-set victory to pull within one win of the main singles draw Tuesday on day four of the ITA All-American Championships, one of three national championship events on the college tennis calendar.
Whitehead knocked off East Tennessee State’s Sander Gille by a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 count in the qualifying draw’s round of 64. The Sugar Land native would earn a berth in the main singles draw on Wednesday with a win over Oklahoma’s Peerakit Siributwong.
Sophomore David Holiner and freshman Soren Hess-Olesen tallied an 8-6 win over Tennessee Tech’s Alex Chen and Syrym Abdukhalikov in the qualifying doubles draw’s round of 64. The Texas tandem will need two wins on Wednesday to advance to the main draw. Holiner and Hess-Olesen will meet either the Yale tandem of Erik Blumenkranz and Joel Samaha or the Texas A&M duo of Colin Hoover and Alexis Klegou in their next match on Wednesday.
Texas picked up a pair of consolation singles wins Tuesday from Chen and Hess-Olesen. Chen edged Virginia’s Steven Rooda, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8), and Hess-Olesen notched a 6-1, 6-3 win over Michigan’s Shaun Bernstein.
