Longhorns also advance all four doubles pairs to the next round in Saturday’s main doubles draw.

 

                COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas advanced five to the round of 32 in the main singles draw and advanced all four doubles teams to the round of 16 Friday on day one of the ITA Texas Regional Championships at Texas A&M’s Mitchell Tennis Center.

                UT’s 59th-ranked Daniel Whitehead opened play in the singles draw with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Rice’s Michael Nuesslein.  He will take on Texas A&M’s John Lewis in Saturday’s round of 32.  Lewis is the older brother of Texas freshman Jacoby Lewis, who posted a 6-3, 6-3 win in his opening match against Rice’s Peter Frank.  Jacoby Lewis will meet TCU’s J.T. Sundling in Saturday’s round of 32.

                Sophomore David Holiner also was victorious, as he posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over UT-Arlington’s Nicolas Moreno.  Holiner will meet Texas A&M’s Alberto Bautista in the round of 32.  UT freshman Soren Hess-Olesen dealt Rice’s Jonathan Chang a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeat and will meet Baylor’s Marko Krickovic in the round of 32.

                UT junior Ben Chen notched a 6-3, 6-3 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Aurelien Tave and will take on Texas A&M’s Jackson Withrow in the round of 32.

                Texas will send all four of its doubles pairs to Saturday’s round of 16.  After winning in the round of 64, UT’s Chris Camillone and Holiner earned a bye into the round of 16 due to the default (due to injury) from Texas Tech’s top-seeded tandem of Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini.
