AUSTIN, Texas - No. 17 Texas swept Maryland, 4-0, in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Saturday at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns swept the doubles point and then used singles victories from Daniel Whitehead, Soren Hess-Olesen and David Holiner to complete the win.

Whitehead and Holiner took the No. 2 doubles match 8-6, and the duo of Jacoby Lewis and Sudanwa Sitaram clinched the doubles point for the Longhorns with an 8-3 win over Maryland's Jesse Kiuru and Tommy Laine.

No. 112 Whitehead kept the scoring going for Texas as he defeated John Collins 6-2, 6-1 to put the Longhorns up 2-0 over the Terrapins.

"Daniel's a great athlete," UT head coach Michael Center said. "He has really good hands around the net and is a great competitor. Daniel's been around for a while, and he knows how to get it done and how to win."

Hess-Olesen, a freshman, gave UT a 3-0 lead with his 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 singles match over Maros Horny. Holiner then clinched the match for the Longhorns with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles over Maryland's Andy Magee.

The Longhorns are now 3-0 in the 2012 dual match season.

"The energy level today was good. I think Maryland's strength is in their doubles. We came out and got breaks early in the doubles, which I think set the tone. We did a good job of getting that point," Center said. "We've got some things we've got to keep working on. We kind of took a step back in second sets, but overall it was a really good effort today."

UT returns to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. and will face No. 21 Texas Tech, who defeated Michigan by a 4-3 count Saturday evening in a match spanning four hours. The match will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network. Grant Boone (play-by-play) and Taylor Dent (color analyst) will have the call.
