VCU Spears Spartans, Nabs Fifth Straigth Win

RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Olena Leonchuk and freshman Mihaela Bunea each earned their team-best 17th singles win and Virginia Commonwealth University rolled to a season-high fifth straight victory Sunday, 6-1, over UNC Greensboro at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

The Rams moved to 14-5 with the win. It’s VCU’s longest undefeated stretch since opening the 2008 season 12-0. UNC Greensboro is 6-3 overall.

Leonchuk won her ninth consecutive match, topping Lucy Dougherty, 6-3, 6-1 on the No. 5 court. Leonchuk has not lost a singles contest since Feb. 13.

Additionally, sophomore Kateryna Yergina continued her month-long roll. Yergina defeated Arielle VonStrolley, 7-5, 6-3 at second singles for her ninth straight triumph. Yergina is 16-4 in singles play this year, including 14-3 in dual matches.

Bunea improved her record to 17-6 when she defeated Jessica Eblen, 6-0, 6-2 on the No. 6 court.

VCU returns to action on Friday, March 27 when it hosts defending Colonial Athletic Association champion William & Mary at the Thalhimer Tennis Center at 3 p.m.
