Western Michigan Men's Tennis Wins at Purdue, 4-3
Saturday, 01/31/2009

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team continued to prove it can hang with the Big Ten by winning at Purdue, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

The Broncos (6-1) finished their Indiana road swing with two wins in two matches and improved their current winning streak to three in a row.

The nationally-ranked No. 33 tandem of freshman Zeyad Montasser and sophomore Michael Calderone started the winning with an 8-5 win at No. 2. The Boilermakers (0-2) responded and won at No. 3 doubles, but senior Kevin Hayward and sophomore Casey Cullen managed to earn the 8-6 decision at No. 1 and give the Broncos the lead, 1-0, going in singles.

Sophomore Brad Noel didn't waste any time in adding to the lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Thomas Wilson at No. 6, but Purdue won at No. 5 to get on the board.

Sophomore Kazuya Komada continued to play well after coming off a slight knee injury and defeated Roberto Cabrini 7-6 (3), 6-3 at No. 3 to put WMU back up two, 3-1.

Purdue cut into the lead again with a win at No. 1, but Calderone completed his come-from-behind victory moments later over Branko Kuzmanovic 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (5) at No. 2 to give the Broncos the win.

Western Michigan takes a well-deserved break before resuming action with a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 11 against Michigan State at 1 p.m. and Ferris State at 6:30 p.m. at West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo. Admission is free.
