Sunday, 04/05/2009

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team didn't drop a set in dispatching of Northern Illinois, 7-0, at the Clocktower Resort in Rockford, Ill., on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos (14-8, 3-0 MAC) won their fifth in a row this season and 20th in a row over a Mid-American Conference opponent to remain unbeaten in conference play.

The Broncos didn't take long to take the lead with a trio of victories in doubles, dropping only seven combined games in three matches. Casey Cullen and Pablo Olivarez won 8-1 at No. 3, while Michael Calderone and Kazuya Komada and Kevin Hayward with Zeyad Montasser won 8-3 at No. 1 and 2.

Calderone may have played even better in singles as Pawel Poziomski won just one game against the sophomore from Grass Lake, Mich. Calderone won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 for his team-leading 27th singles win of the season.

Cullen then finished off Javier Bernabe 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 for his team-leading sixth singles victory in a row and Pablo Olivarez clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jimmy Chu at No. 5.

The Broncos rounded out the scoring with Montasser taking out Michigan native Ross VanderPloeg 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6, Hayward won 7-5, 6-2 over NIU freshman standout Jurica Grubisic at No. 1 and Komada defeated Shaun Stewart 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.

With his two wins against the Huskies (5-8, 1-1 MAC), Hayward broke a three-way tie for seventh place with 185 career wins, one shy of fifth place all-time at WMU.

Western Michigan will remain on the road next weekend when they take on perennial conference rival Ball State in Muncie, Ind., on Saturday at 1 p.m.
