KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team swept a pair of matches from Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo, 7-0, and crosstown rival Kalamazoo College, 9-0, on Sunday.

The win over Buffalo was the 19th consecutive victory over a MAC opponent for the Brown & Gold, while the victory over Kalamazoo College was WMU's 12th in a row in the battle for the Wagner Cup. The Hornets have never won more than one point, if they win a point at all, in any of the last 12 matches in the battle of Kalamazoo.

The Broncos (13-8, 2-0 MAC) opened the day at West Hills Athletic Club against the Bulls (7-8, 1-2 MAC) in their second MAC match of the season. WMU opened by taking the doubles point with Kevin Hayward and Zeyad Montasser winning 8-4 at No. 2, while Casey Cullen and Pablo Olivarez won 8-3 at No. 3.

Buffalo wouldn't go quietly in singles and made WMU work to take control. The Bulls won the first set at No. 3 and forced tiebreakers at No. 2 and No. 5, but the Broncos were able to win both tiebreakers and moments later the outcome was never in doubt.

Cullen stepped off the court first with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4, followed by Hayward with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Montasser clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6.

After surviving a first set tiebreaker, Olivarez rolled at No. 5 7-6 (4), 6-0 and Michael Calderone did the same at No. 2 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Three-time MAC Player of the Week Kazuya Komada was fighting from behind all day at No. 3 singles against Alex Kalinin. Kalinin won the first set and was leading 5-3 in the second set when Komada rallied. Komada won each of the next four games to force a third set superbreaker, which he also won to take the match 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7).

There wasn't as much drama in the nightcap at the Markin Center on the Kalamazoo College campus as the Broncos won all nine matches to take the victory.

Casey Cullen, Kevin Hayward, Zeyad Montasser and Pablo Olivarez all finished the day 4-0 against the Bulls and the Hornets (5-5).

With his four wins, Hayward moved into a tie for seventh place all-time at Western Michigan with 183 career victories. His win against Cyrus Jaden of Kalamazoo College was the 100th singles victory of Hayward's career.
