SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly women’s tennis team opened its 2010 spring schedule on Saturday afternoon by dropping just eight total sets on Mustang Courts in whitewashing Cal State Bakersfield, 7-0.
Seniors Suzie Matzenauer and Brittany Blalock opened Cal Poly’s doubles account with an 8-2 victory against the Cal State Bakersfield tandem of sophomore Veronica Dimas and freshman Julian Mannix. Cal Poly, which posted a 12-9 record in dual matches last season and finished third in the Big West Conference standings with a 6-2 mark, then received a victory in the No. 2 doubles spot by senior Steffi Wong and freshman Alexa Lee, who downed sophomore Nefeli Diamanti and freshman Gabriela Horton, 8-1. At No. 3, senior Diane Filip and junior Ashley Pane also posted an 8-1 decision against freshman Julie Hutton and junior Ashlee Thorneycroft.
Blalock next opened singles action with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Dimas. Matzenauer, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s 98th-ranked singles player, followed at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Thorneycroft. At No. 3, Wong defeated senior Sara Mijwel, 6-0, 6-1, before Filip prevailed at No. 4 versus Mannix, 6-0, 6-0. Lee posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision versus Horton at No. 5 while Mustang sophomore Jocelyn Davis completed Cal Poly’s sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 victory versus Hutton.
“I thought today we came out very hungry and eager to play,” Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. “If you look at the scores, I thought the players focused really well in playing each point tough.”
Cal Poly’s Monday match at No. 40 Pepperdine, scheduled for 1:30 p.m., has been postponed due to impending inclement weather in southern California. A new match date has not been confirmed.
As of Sunday afternoon, Cal Poly’s match at No. 12 UCLA on Tuesday, Jan. 19 was still scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
The Mustangs return home to host Santa Clara on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m.
