NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee each produced victories in singles and doubles action on Sunday afternoon as the Cal Poly women’s tennis program completed its 2012 Big West Conference schedule by topping Cal State Northridge at Matador Tennis Complex, 4-3.

Davis and Lee opened Cal Poly’s matchup by producing an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles against Cal State Northridge’s Jennifer Sher and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing. Cal Poly (10-9, 5-3), however, suffered an 8-1 loss at No. 2 as sophomores Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb were topped by Anna Yang and Nigora Sirojiddinova. The Mustangs then dropped the doubles point at No. 3 as sophomore Gabby Gatewood and freshman Ireen Kuipers went down against Lorraine Cheung and Maria Pistalu, 8-4.

Cal Poly rebounded immediately in singles action with Lee besting Sher at No. 1, 6-7 (9), 7-5, 6-3, before Davis eased past Sirojiddinova at No. 2, 7-5, 6-2. Mustang sophomore Jen Cornea produced a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 against Yang before Webb suffered a 0-6, 6-1, 7-5 setback at No. 4 versus Man-Son-Hing. Gatewood, however, completed a 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory against Pistalu at No. 5 to neutralize McPike’s 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 6 against Cheung.

“Today was just an all-out battle for us. We knew it would be a rough match and we dug ourselves a hole by not playing great in doubles,” said first-year Mustang head coach Damon Coupe, whose Mustangs won their third Big West Conference match during a six-day span. “We came together after doubles, however, and decided how we wanted to play. Alexa, with all of the pressure on her, played free. It was a great effort by our entire team.”

Cal Poly completes the 2012 regular season schedule when hosting No. 53 Fresno State on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m. on Mustang Courts.
