SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee headlined the Cal Poly women’s tennis program’s 2012 All-Big West Conference selections on Tuesday afternoon with the Mustang duo each earning honors in both singles and doubles action.
Playing exclusively at the No. 1 singles position, Lee (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) posted nine victories to earn All-Big West first team recognition for the second-successive season. Davis (East Stroudsburg, Penn.), who chalked up 10 singles triumphs between the No. 2 and 3 positions in Cal Poly’s lineup, earned All-Big West honorable mention praise.
Davis and Lee also received All-Big West first team praise in doubles where, competing strictly at the No. 1 position for the Mustangs, they combined to post a 13-8 record that included a 5-3 mark against conference opposition. Tuesday’s announcement marked Lee’s second-straight first team honor in doubles.
Davis, who earned All-Big West honorable mention praise in doubles last season, departs Cal Poly with a 43-24 career singles record in dual matches and a 28-15 mark in doubles play. Lee, meanwhile, takes a 30-28 singles record and a 43-21 collegiate doubles mark in dual matches into her 2013 spring senior season.
“These are great accomplishments for Alexa and Jocelyn. They each worked extremely hard this year and being recognized as All-Big West selections is proof of that,” first-year Mustang head coach Damon Coupe said. “They led the charge at the top of our lineup in singles and doubles and consistently faced the top players from each opponent. I’m so proud of their effort during the season.”
As a team, the 2012 Mustangs (10-11) won their final three conference matches during a six-day span to solidify a top-four finish in the final Big West standings for a fifth-successive season. Cal Poly, however, saw its season come to a close with a 4-3 loss against UC Santa Barbara during the April 27 quarterfinal round of the Big West Championships.
