SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomores Jen Cornea and Kathryn Webb both generated victories in singles and doubles play on Tuesday as the Cal Poly women’s tennis program secured a 4-3 triumph against UC Santa Barbara on Mustang Courts by winning the final doubles match of the afternoon.

With singles played first due to expected inclement weather and the match drawn at 3-3, Cal Poly’s top doubles pairing of senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee fell at the No. 1 spot against Jordan Dockendorf and Natalia Lozano, 8-5. Cal Poly, however, received an 8-4 victory at No. 2 from Webb and sophomore Ane McPike against Sofia Novak and Paola Cos before an 8-3 triumph at No. 3 by Cornea and sophomore Gabby Gatewood versus April Scatliffe and Kiersten Meehan handed Cal Poly the match.

In singles action, Lee topped Novak at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2, before Lozano slid past Davis at No. 2, 6-3, 7-5. Cornea rallied at No. 3 to post a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory against Scatliffe before Webb topped Meehan at No. 4, 7-5, 6-4. At No. 5, Cos bested Gatewood (6-2, 6-5) while McPike fell at No. 6 against Dockendorf (6-3, 6-0).

“There was a huge effort by our entire team today,” first-year Mustang head coach Damon Coupe said. “We made some commitments to each other about how we want to play and finish our season. We held true to those commitments today and it paid off. I’m very proud that this team has no quit in them.”

Cal Poly (8-9, 3-3), which snapped a three-match slide with Tuesday’s triumph, closes a three-match home stand when hosting UC Riverside on Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m.
