SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomores Gabby Gatewood and Ane McPike produced victories in singles play, but the Cal Poly women’s tennis team closed its 2012 regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon by dropping a 5-2 decision against No. 48 Fresno State on Mustang Courts.

Cal Poly (10-10), which finished the 2012 season with a 7-5 home mark, was swept by Fresno State (11-8) in doubles action. At No. 1, senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee fell against Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin and Laura Pola, 8-6, before Mustang sophomore Kathryn Webb and McPike dropped an 8-3 decision at No. 2 versus Aishwarya Agrawal and Bianca Modoc. At No. 3, Gatewood teamed with freshman Ireen Kuipers, but the duo suffered an 8-5 loss against Melissa McQueen and Tanya Murtagh.

In singles action, the 42nd-ranked Jodoin topped Lee at No. 1, 7-5, 7-6. Davis fell at No. 2 against Agrawal, 6-2, 6-3, ahead of Mustang sophomore Jen Cornea’s 7-6, 6-4 loss at No. 3 versus McQueen. After Webb dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 4 against Modoc, Gatewood salvaged Cal Poly’s first victory on Saturday by topping Pola at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 6, Murtagh produced a 6-4 opening-set victory against McPike but, trailing in the second set, was forced to retire.

Seeded No. 4 for the April 26-29 Big West Conference Championships, Cal Poly opens play at Indian Wells Tennis Garden with an 11 a.m. quarterfinal matchup against fifth-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Friday, April 27. Cal Poly previously dealt the fifth-seeded Gauchos a 4-3 home defeat on April 10. The survivor of the Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara matchup advances to an April 28 semifinal showdown against, most likely, top-seeded and 54th-ranked Long Beach State.
