LOS ANGELES – Highlighted by a sweep of the doubles action, the Cal Poly women’s tennis team returned to the court on Sunday afternoon to deal Loyola Marymount a 5-2 defeat at the LMU Tennis Center.

Cal Poly’s No. 1 doubles tandem of seniors Brittany Blalock and Suzie Matzenauer stayed unbeaten during the spring campaign with an 8-5 decision against Loyola Marymount’s Jasmin Heckel and Bliss Nixon. The No. 2 Mustang side of senior Steffi Wong and freshman Alexa Lee clinched the doubles point with 8-1 victory against Melissa Valenzuela and Elisaveta Pironkova. Senior Diane Filip and junior Ashley Pane solidified the doubles whitewash at No. 3 with an 8-0 thrashing of Jane Pringle and Audrey Bulkley.

At No. 1 singles, the 98th-ranked Matzenauer was upended by Heckel, 6-3, 6-4. Blalock returned at No. 2 to defeat Pironkova, 6-2, 6-4, but, at No. 3, Pringle rallied to defeat Wong, 0-6, 7-6, 10-4. Filip squared the singles ledger at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Estelle LaPorte. After dropping five of the initial six games against Valenzuela at No. 5, Mustang sophomore Jocelyn Davis (above) posted a 7-5, 6-4 win. Junior Amy Markhoff capped Cal Poly’s win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6 versus Nixon.

“I thought we rebounded well from Saturday and came out really ready to play in doubles,” said head coach Hugh Bream, whose Mustangs opened Big West Conference play with a 4-3 loss at No. 48 UC Irvine on Saturday. “We competed well in singles against a Loyola Marymount program that is a better singles team than a doubles team. I was really impressed with Jocelyn Davis, who won after being down in her first set, 5-1.”

Cal Poly (3-1, 0-1) resumes Big West action at Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m.
