SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly women’s tennis team furthered its Big West Conference winning streak to three-successive matches and stayed unbeaten at home during the 2010 spring campaign with a 7-0 whitewash of UC Davis on Mustang Courts Sunday.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Steffi Wong and freshman Alexa Lee opened Cal Poly’s triumph and stayed undefeated this season with an 8-4 victory against Ellie Edles and Herzyl Legaspi. UC Davis squared the doubles point with a victory at No. 3, as Noelle Eades and Lauren Curry posted an 8-4 decision against Mustang senior Diane Filip and junior Ashley Pane. Cal Poly’s No. 1 pairing of seniors Suzie Matzenauer and Brittany Blalock, however, salvaged the doubles point with an 8-6 triumph versus Desiree Stone and Herzyl Legaspi.

“We might have come out flat in doubles for the first time this year, but were able to regroup at the end,” Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. “Matzenauer and Blalock played tough tennis to clinch the point and Wong (above) and Lee have been playing consistently great all season long.”

In singles action, Matzenauer rallied at No. 1 to post a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Stone. Blalock downed Zamudio at No. 2, 6-3, 7-6, before Wong regroup to hand Legaspi a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 defeat. At No. 4, Filip edged Curry, 6-4, 6-2, while at No. 5, Lee surpassed Edles, 6-0, 6-3. Sophomore Jocelyn Davis ended with day with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at No. 6 versus Brady.

Cal Poly (7-2, 3-1) continues its six-match homestand on Friday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara.

“The players are competing with a lot of confidence and toughness and want to excel each time out,” Bream added. “I was really pleased with our effort today and I’d like to see a large crowd come out and support us against UC Santa Barbara.”
