Cal Women's Tennis 9/26
Monday, 09/26/2011

Hi Friends of Cal Tennis,

The fall semester is in full swing and we have some great events to share with you. First off, tonight at 6, listen in on the Cal Coaches Corner for Jana Juricova and myself talking about the upcoming season. Second, we would love to see everyone at our annual Cal Nike Fall Invitational. It starts at 8 am on Friday and Saturday, and 9 am on Sunday. See below for details on the event.

Cal Coaches Corner Set For Tonight

Monday's Cal Coaches Corner features a variety of guests representing the Golden Bear football, women's tennis and men's gymnastics teams. The show runs form 6-7 p.m. and can be heard on KNEW Radio (910 AM) or watched live in person at the Paragon in the Claremont Hotel, Club and Spa.

Joining host Todd McKim this week are football coach Jeff Tedford, fullback Will Kapp, women's tennis senior Jana  Juricova and her coach, Amanda Augustus, and men's gymnastics coach Tim McNeill.

Tedford's Bears are coming off a tough, 31-23, setback at Washington on Saturday. Cal (3-1) has a bye this week before returning to action at Oregon on Thursday, Oct. 6 in a game that will be televised by ESPN.

Kapp, son of former Golden Bear quarterback and head coach Joe Kapp, not only contributes on offense, but he is also one of the squad's top special teams players. The senior from Los Gatos has three carries for 14 yards, one pass reception for 16 yards and six special teams' tackles this season.

Juricova is ranked No. 1 in the country in the fall singles ratings, a position that comes as no surprise as she is the defending NCAA champion after capturing the title last spring. She completed the 2010-11 campaign with a 36-4 record and picked up ITA National Player of the Year and Honda Sports Award honors along the way. A two-time first-team All-Pac-10 selection, Juricova also teamed with Mari Andersson to earn the Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year award.

A two-time NCAA doubles champion as a player for the Bears, Augustus returned to her alma mater as head coach in 2007. Under her guidance, Cal has twice been the NCAA team runner-up. Later this fall, she and former doubles partner Amy Jensen will be inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame.

McNeill is back for his second year as head men's gymnastics coach after leading the Bears to a fourth-place NCAA finish last season. The 2011 MPSF Coach of the Year, McNeill won five individual NCAA titles as a competitor for the Bears, more than any other gymnast in school history.

The Cal Coaches Corner is broadcast each Monday from August through March and includes interviews and features with Golden Bear coaches, student-athletes and alumni from all 29 intercollegiate sports. Fans are welcome to submit questions for any of the guests by visiting here.
