Monday, 03/12/2012

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior Jocelyn Davis and sophomores Kathryn Webb (above) and Jen Cornea each pulled out a three-set victory in singles action on Sunday afternoon as the Cal Poly women's tennis program upended No. 66 Santa Clara on Mustang Courts, 6-1.

Cal Poly (7-6) opened its victory by sweeping the doubles point from Santa Clara. At No. 1, junior Alexa Lee and Davis defeated Santa Clara's Katie Le and Jessica Agra, 8-5, before the Mustang sophomore duo of Ane McPike and Webb prevailed by the same score at No. 2 versus Alex Zaniewski and Kacie Wagner. Cal Poly completed the doubles whitewash at No. 3 as Gatewood and freshman Ireen Kuipers pounded Nicolette Wolny and Kelly Lamble, 8-1.

In singles action, Lee suffered Cal Poly's only loss on the day when dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 1 against Le. Davis rallied at No. 2 to deal Zaniewski a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat before Mustang sophomore Jen Cornea produced a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory at No. 3 against Lamble. Webb resumed action at No. 4 by topping Wagner, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, before Gatewood blew past Agra at No. 5, 6-2, 7-5. McPike rounded off Cal Poly's dominating win at No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Charli Newell.

"This was a 100 percent determined Mustang team today," first-year head coach Damon Coupe said. "We knew that emotions were going to play a big part and we addressed that yesterday. We came out focused and loose and played some excellent doubles. Our 'bend but don't break' philosophy was true today as we built a lead and then held off their push. I am truly proud of the players."

Following an eight-day hiatus, Cal Poly resumes play when hosting Dartmouth on Monday, March 19. Match time on Mustang Courts is set for 11 a.m.
